When Truth Costs Everything
How My Body's Breakdown Became My Breakthrough — A Memoir, yet to be published
A thirty-year account of high-functioning survival — and what it took to finally stop.
What This Book Is About
At nineteen, Annica left Sweden with momentum and a belief that freedom was a destination. What followed was thirty years of building a life under pressure — chiropractic college in the UK conducted in a second language, a practice built from the ground up, motherhood, a decade of family law conflict, and a health collapse that should have been fatal. Along the way, she became very good at one thing: functioning.
This book is about what happens when functioning is no longer enough. It is not a crisis story. It is an account of the patterns that kept one capable, competent person running well past sustainable — and the slow, non-linear work of finding a different way to live. Part memoir, part clinical framework, it moves from collapse to a practical model for recovery grounded in neuroscience, physiology, and lived experience.
This is not a book with five easy steps. It is an honest account of how change actually works — and what becomes possible when you stop performing and start listening.
The Healing Framework
At the heart of the book is a six-stage model for recovering from chronic stress and trauma — physiologically grounded, clinically informed, and built from Annica's own path through collapse and back:
- Recognition and Choice — noticing that something must change; the decision point between continuing old patterns and beginning to rewrite the narrative
- Physiological Recovery — restoring the body first: organ systems, hormonal balance, tissue integrity. The mind and spirit cannot integrate fully until the body has been given back its footing
- Behavioural Reconditioning — unlearning the nervous system patterns encoded by trauma: fight, flight, freeze, compulsive efficiency. Teaching the body that it is safe to act differently
- Emotional Regulation — learning to observe and move emotions without suppression or self-judgment; building coherence between what you feel and what you choose
- Somatic Integration — addressing traumatic memory stored in the body; calming the nervous system through breathwork, movement, and embodied practice
- Coherence and Conscious Expression — responding rather than reacting; integrating the past into present action; living from agency and self-trust rather than endurance
Who This Book Is For
You might recognise yourself in here if:
- You have spent years being the capable one — the person who holds things together — and something is starting to give
- You have pushed through enough that pushing has started to feel like your only gear
- Your body has been asking questions your life has been too busy to answer
- You have survived something — a relationship, a system, a version of yourself — and you are not sure what comes next
- You work in health or caring professions and have been so focused on other people that you have quietly lost the thread of your own life
- You are done with the version of resilience that just means carrying more
